The refugee and asylum provisions of this Act focus on assuring\ninformed and accurate determinations of individual requests for safe haven. More particularly, the\nAct incorporates the results of newly required studies on religious persecution into the training of\nofficials who determine refugee and asylum claims. Separate provisions address eliminating other\npotential biases and inaccuracies in screening applicants for asylum and refugee status. Furthermore,\ncertain aliens who participated in religious persecution abroad are now barred from admission into\nthe United States. Also, new studies on the effect of expedited removal procedures on the asylum\nprocess are required. Not included in the Act are earlier, more sweeping proposals considered by\nthe House to revise the expedited removal process and the statutory guidelines for refugee admission\npriorities.", "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORTS", "active": false, "formats": [ { "format": "PDF", "encoding": null, "url": "http://www.crs.gov/Reports/pdf/98-906", "sha1": "0ae563dab6812951dd9db7cc7379d330e20c2c65", "filename": "files/19981104_98-906_0ae563dab6812951dd9db7cc7379d330e20c2c65.pdf", "images": null }, { "format": "HTML", "filename": "files/19981104_98-906_0ae563dab6812951dd9db7cc7379d330e20c2c65.html" } ], "topics": [] } ], "topics": [ "American Law" ] }
