The rule sets the size of each committee, and Senate tradition\ndictates that, in most instances, party ratios in committee reflect the overall party ratio in the\nchamber. Both parties utilize Member seniority, state represented, and ideology as factors\ninfluencing committee assignments.\n Rule XXV divides committees into three classes, characterized as A, B, and C. Class A\nconsists of 12 standing committees; class B includes four standing committees, two select\ncommittees and one joint committee; and class C includes two select or special committees and three\njoint committees. \n Normally, each Senator would be assigned to three committees (two in class A and one in class\nB) and eight subcommittees (three on each class A committee, and two on the class B committee). \nThere are no limitations on assignments to class C panels.\n However, under exceptions often granted in the rule (called \"grandfather rights\"), some\nSenators have additional committee and subcommittee assignments.\n This report details these limitations and exceptions.", "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORTS", "active": false, "formats": [ { "format": "PDF", "encoding": null, "url": "http://www.crs.gov/Reports/pdf/98-912", "sha1": "04a86fb9cfe434fc4c5863bda9e415243187a5a4", "filename": "files/20001104_98-912_04a86fb9cfe434fc4c5863bda9e415243187a5a4.pdf", "images": null }, { "format": "HTML", "filename": "files/20001104_98-912_04a86fb9cfe434fc4c5863bda9e415243187a5a4.html" } ], "topics": [] } ], "topics": [ "Economic Policy" ] }
