In the months immediately\nfollowing the summit, the two Koreas developed a new dialogue, which included several\ninter-ministerial talks, a meeting of defense ministers, talks on economic cooperation, and family\nreunions. The sheer breadth and depth of the dialogue indicated to many analysts that Seoul and\nPyongyang were trying in earnest to regularize and institutionalize the rapprochement, in contrast\nto previously ephemeral thaws in 1972, 1985 and the early 1990s. There have been several setbacks,\nhowever, leading many critics to wonder whether North Korea's diplomatic outreach is merely a\ntactic to obtain economic assistance and reduce the U.S. troop presence in South Korea. Since\nFebruary 2001, inter-Korean diplomacy has effectively been frozen. With South Korean President\nKim Dae Jung being openly labeled a \"lame duck,\" many have wondered whether his sunshine\npolicy of engaging North Korea has run out of steam.\n Due to the growing length of the chronology, this report will not be updated. Instead, a new\nNorth-South timeline will be started each calendar year, beginning with events on January 1 of that\nyear.", "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORTS", "active": false, "formats": [ { "format": "HTML", "encoding": "utf-8", "url": "http://www.crs.gov/Reports/RL30811", "sha1": "c21ab7db71693a8ec1b7a84c32a737d1e5d8e171", "filename": "files/20020109_RL30811_c21ab7db71693a8ec1b7a84c32a737d1e5d8e171.html", "images": null }, { "format": "PDF", "encoding": null, "url": "http://www.crs.gov/Reports/pdf/RL30811", "sha1": "7d76d9ae63f31d467047fb6e88b9d4929a9e4bd1", "filename": "files/20020109_RL30811_7d76d9ae63f31d467047fb6e88b9d4929a9e4bd1.pdf", "images": null } ], "topics": [] }, { "source": "University of North Texas Libraries Government Documents Department", "sourceLink": "https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metacrs1790/", "id": "RL30811 2001-04-30", "date": "2001-04-30", "retrieved": "2005-06-11T18:21:33", "title": "North-South Korean Relations: A Chronology of the \"New\" Dialogue", "summary": null, "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORT", "active": false, "formats": [ { "format": "PDF", "filename": "files/20010430_RL30811_8aff79a6dc20a3fe8c4517e66543383b88ac56bd.pdf" }, { "format": "HTML", "filename": "files/20010430_RL30811_8aff79a6dc20a3fe8c4517e66543383b88ac56bd.html" } ], "topics": [ { "source": "LIV", "id": "Foreign policy", "name": "Foreign policy" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Foreign relations - South Korea - North Korea", "name": "Foreign relations - South Korea - North Korea" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Foreign relations - North Korea - South Korea", "name": "Foreign relations - North Korea - South Korea" } ] } ], "topics": [ "Foreign Affairs", "Intelligence and National Security" ] }
