The United States currently maintains robust sanctions regimes against foreign governments it has identified as proliferators (particularly Iran, North Korea, and Syria). If the 112th Congress takes up even a fraction of the proposals introduced by its predecessor involving economic sanctions, the President and the Departments of State, Commerce, and Treasury\u2014those agencies that implement and administer the bulk of sanctions regimes\u2014will likely find the role of Congress in determining the use of sanctions also robust.\nThis report offers a listing and brief description of legal provisions that require or authorize the imposition of some form of economic sanction against countries, companies, persons, or entities that violate U.S. nonproliferation norms. For each provision, information is included on what triggers the imposition of sanctions, their duration, what authority the President has to delay or abstain from imposing sanctions, and what authority the President has to waive the imposition of sanctions.", "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORTS", "active": true, "formats": [ { "format": "HTML", "encoding": "utf-8", "url": "http://www.crs.gov/Reports/RL31502", "sha1": "ee74fce0e50ea4f4f3ea9e201fb01bc4813af66e", "filename": "files/20101130_RL31502_ee74fce0e50ea4f4f3ea9e201fb01bc4813af66e.html", "images": null }, { "format": "PDF", "encoding": null, "url": "http://www.crs.gov/Reports/pdf/RL31502", "sha1": "06bf1d456d417af3f770c3afe931ab98633211ab", "filename": "files/20101130_RL31502_06bf1d456d417af3f770c3afe931ab98633211ab.pdf", "images": null } ], "topics": [ { "source": "IBCList", "id": 3227, "name": "Proliferation and Arms Control" }, { "source": "IBCList", "id": 4531, "name": "Defense Authorization" } ] }, { "source": "University of North Texas Libraries Government Documents Department", "sourceLink": "https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc811836/", "id": "RL31502_2007Jan08", "date": "2007-01-08", "retrieved": "2016-03-19T13:57:26", "title": "Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, and Missile Proliferation Sanctions: Selected Current Law", "summary": null, "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORT", "active": false, "formats": [ { "format": "PDF", "filename": "files/20070108_RL31502_b8ef7f7da9893104ccbebb08479aa632f76ae527.pdf" }, { "format": "HTML", "filename": "files/20070108_RL31502_b8ef7f7da9893104ccbebb08479aa632f76ae527.html" } ], "topics": [] }, { "source": "University of North Texas Libraries Government Documents Department", "sourceLink": "https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc811625/", "id": "RL31502_2005Oct21", "date": "2005-10-21", "retrieved": "2016-03-19T13:57:26", "title": "Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, and Missile Proliferation Sanctions: Selected Current Law", "summary": null, "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORT", "active": false, "formats": [ { "format": "PDF", "filename": "files/20051021_RL31502_f9e34960391a77e75c4f90d00ccf3809b16e962c.pdf" }, { "format": "HTML", "filename": "files/20051021_RL31502_f9e34960391a77e75c4f90d00ccf3809b16e962c.html" } ], "topics": [] }, { "source": "University of North Texas Libraries Government Documents Department", "sourceLink": "https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metacrs5084/", "id": "RL31502 2003-01-24", "date": "2003-01-24", "retrieved": "2005-06-11T22:17:52", "title": "Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, and Missile Proliferation Sanctions: Selected Current Law", "summary": null, "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORT", "active": false, "formats": [ { "format": "PDF", "filename": "files/20030124_RL31502_c12391c6fb36eb5a1c17f2f994f4a2df8ea97331.pdf" }, { "format": "HTML", "filename": "files/20030124_RL31502_c12391c6fb36eb5a1c17f2f994f4a2df8ea97331.html" } ], "topics": [ { "source": "LIV", "id": "International affairs", "name": "International affairs" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Nuclear nonproliferation", "name": "Nuclear nonproliferation" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Sanctions (International law)", "name": "Sanctions (International law)" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Defense policy", "name": "Defense policy" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Trade", "name": "Trade" } ] }, { "source": "University of North Texas Libraries Government Documents Department", "sourceLink": "https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metacrs3209/", "id": "RL31502 2002-07-15", "date": "2002-07-15", "retrieved": "2005-06-11T22:17:00", "title": "Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, and Missile Proliferation Sanctions: Selected Current Law", "summary": null, "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORT", "active": false, "formats": [ { "format": "PDF", "filename": "files/20020715_RL31502_dc4b1544c81f0408a643d3d7b052d18f00008bf1.pdf" }, { "format": "HTML", "filename": "files/20020715_RL31502_dc4b1544c81f0408a643d3d7b052d18f00008bf1.html" } ], "topics": [ { "source": "LIV", "id": "International affairs", "name": "International affairs" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Nuclear nonproliferation", "name": "Nuclear nonproliferation" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Sanctions (International law)", "name": "Sanctions (International law)" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Defense policy", "name": "Defense policy" }, { "source": "LIV", "id": "Trade", "name": "Trade" } ] } ], "topics": [ "Economic Policy", "Energy Policy", "Foreign Affairs", "Intelligence and National Security", "National Defense" ] }
