Although officials do not believe that this outbreak is bioterrorism,\nthe delay between the initial presentation of an unusual disease and the notification to the federal\ngovernment has raised concerns regarding the state of bioterrorism preparedness. The Centers for\nDisease Control and Prevention (CDC) have provided guidance to local communities regarding\nhandling of ill patients and animals, treatment regimens, and sample protocols. The CDC have\nrecommended and released smallpox vaccine as prophylaxis against monkeypox infection. The\nCDC and the Food and Drug Administration banned interstate commerce in prairie dogs and certain\nother rodents and the CDC suspended import of all rodents from Africa. Possible issues related to\nthis outbreak include the regulatory process that allowed import of diseased animals; how efficient\nthe public health system response has been in alerting the government to potential health\nemergencies; and whether the monkeypox outbreak provides an opportunity to evaluate recent efforts\nto increase public health preparedness and the state of bioterrorism preparedness. This report will\nbe updated as events warrant.", "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORTS", "active": false, "formats": [ { "format": "PDF", "encoding": null, "url": "http://www.crs.gov/Reports/pdf/RS21557", "sha1": "7f686249a9b8eb61db84ad52bdfec245a199b472", "filename": "files/20030627_RS21557_7f686249a9b8eb61db84ad52bdfec245a199b472.pdf", "images": null }, { "format": "HTML", "filename": "files/20030627_RS21557_7f686249a9b8eb61db84ad52bdfec245a199b472.html" } ], "topics": [] } ], "topics": [ "Domestic Social Policy", "National Defense", "Science and Technology Policy" ] }
