Current eligibility requirements include (1) verification of an applicant\u2019s disability, (2) filing a claim, (3) a \u201crecent work\u201d and \u201cduration of work\u201d test, (4) verification that an individual has not reached normal retirement age, and (5) a five-month waiting period from disability-onset.\nIn implementing the five-month waiting period for SSDI benefits, Congress sought to set a time frame that would be long enough for a short-term injury or illness to be corrected, but would also deter individuals who can work from applying for benefits. The first month counted as part of the waiting period can be no more than 17 months before the month of application, and benefits can be applied retroactively for up to 12 months. The Social Security Administration (SSA) encourages eligible individuals to apply for benefits as soon as possible after the onset of a disabling condition.\nThe waiting period does not apply to individuals who have been previous recipients of SSDI in the five years prior to any current disability. Several other programs, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI), temporary disability insurance, workers\u2019 compensation, unemployment compensation, and private disability insurance, can provide funds for eligible SSDI applicants facing financial hardship during the five-month wait period.", "type": "CRS Report", "typeId": "REPORTS", "active": true, "formats": [ { "format": "HTML", "encoding": "utf-8", "url": "http://www.crs.gov/Reports/RS22220", "sha1": "a7b280da82b3e898c292da9b732df24d44230b69", "filename": "files/20140124_RS22220_a7b280da82b3e898c292da9b732df24d44230b69.html", "images": null }, { "format": "PDF", "encoding": null, "url": "http://www.crs.gov/Reports/pdf/RS22220", "sha1": "188f737b3f67aea13d10031323d3824b9b26c626", "filename": "files/20140124_RS22220_188f737b3f67aea13d10031323d3824b9b26c626.pdf", "images": null } ], "topics": [ { "source": "IBCList", "id": 2912, "name": "Disability Rights and Benefits" } ] }, { "source": "University of North Texas Libraries Government Documents Department", "sourceLink": "https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc463277/", "id": "RS22220_2013Jan24", "date": "2013-01-13", "retrieved": "2014-12-05T09:57:41", "title": "Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI): The Five-Month Waiting Period for Benefits", "summary": "This report explains the five-month waiting period for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits and its legislative history.
